I took a drive up to the Marin Civic Center Farmer's Market today - needed to stock up for houseguests over the weekend, and also stopped by the Ferry Building for a couple of moments. The Marin market day is usually Thursday, so I was a little concerned that the change in day would result in fewer booths, but all the regular farms seemed to be there.
The season has changed and we are finally square in the middle of fall. Tomatoes are a thing of the past, and you mostly notice greens and squashes as you travel through the market. There is so much color in the market these days -- it's not the bright berry red of the summer, but fall brings deeper colors - oranges, greens, yellows. If you haven't been to the market in a while, now is the time to go. Things quiet down this time of year, and the crowds aren't as difficult to deal with. There is a crispness to the air, and the joy of the season permeates the market.
Some items of note:
Satsuma mandarins are here again. Yippee! To me, Satsumas are like candy and I eat them as such. Let's hope for a long season.
I picked up some Rangpur limes from De Santis Farms. As I have said before, it is rare that I walk away from De Santis without something new. These limes are so interesting - they are small and the size of limes, but bright orange in color. The taste apparently is just as sour as a regular lime, however. I think I am going to try these in cocktails. They are beautiful.
Pomegranate season is almost over. I only saw them at a booth or two. If you happen to pick any up this week, click on over to Elise's site for a great pomegranate jelly recipe.
Meyer lemons are back in full force. They usually stick around for quite a while, so I have a good six months or so with these beauties to look forward to.
There are lots of root veggies around - I spotted beets, turnips, carrots, salsify, burdock, daikon, and other items. Once we get past Thanksgiving, I am going to make some roasted root veggies for dinner.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope it is a safe and joyous holiday for you and your family!
