Andy Griffin from Mariquita Farm sends out a weekly newsletter that is well worth subscribing to, whether you are a Bay Area resident or not. His articles are always interesting and insightful. I thought that I'd share one of my favorites for you, as I just dug it up to re-read it and show it to Jason. I had told him the gist of the story when I read it, and we always crack up when we pass a "Happy Donut" store in the city, thinking of Lena and this story.
Emmylou was singing "The darkest hour is just before dawn," on the country music station as I drove our truck north thru the night. She was right, but I didn't know it yet. I was tired from getting up at three that morning.
I had awoken the kids as gently as possible and told them to get dressed to go to the Farmers Market with me. Graydon and Magdalena were good company on the drive to San Francisco. They stayed awake in anticipation of seeing the city sparkle like magic in the dark. Office towers glittered high above us as we rolled off an empty freeway onto quiet streets. It was going to be a long day for the kids so I asked them if they would like to start with a treat at Happy Donut down on the Embarcadero at Third.
