I had to hire a couple of contractors for my "real life" job and did so by posting a job opening on Craig's List. About 100 resumes later, I just have a couple of points of advice for anyone sending resumes ...
1) Don't address cover letters to "Gentlemen" or write "Dear Sir". It is so old school and reeks of sexism. Women executives who are already such a minority in the tech field will ignore your resume no matter how great it is. This one bothers me so much that I really wanted to write back to these people and tell them the huge mistake that they are making. Jason made me promise that I wouldn't ...
2) Don't use an AOL email address on your resume. Some of you may disagree with me, but when someone is applying for a tech position, they should either be using something other than this dumbed-down web software, or they should be astute enough to realize that there is a certain "stigma" with AOL and use a different email domain.
3) Don't reject a company one year saying "I don't really feel like you have anything concrete for me to do" (which I did) and then send a resume the next time I am hiring. Duh ...
4) When seeing my website don't write me an email saying "I went to your website, is that all there is or is there something wrong?". It puts me on the defensive for never having built out my site, and makes you look pushy.
5) Don't write a cover email that simply says "I could do this" with a resume attachment.
End of rant.
