Penny-Wise ELC in the Chronicle
The San Francisco Chronicle published a series of articles today focused on the Penny-Wise Eat Local Challenge. They asked a few participants to take the challenge a couple weeks early, and then reported on their experiences. I had nothing to do with who they chose, but think that the choices were fantastic, as they showed a really good cross-section of people. I was interviewed for the summary article. Read it if you can, or better yet pick up a hard copy today -- the 4-page spread is really overwhelming and cool.

Nick Petti's Experience

I hadn't heard of the penny-wise challenge but i love it. I have been trying to do a modified version of this for our family here in Vermont and recently launched my blog detailing it. We are a family of six (four kids) and i set a budget of 600 dollars a month based on the usda poverty guidelines of what a family of four spends a month. I plan to do this for the whole year (began in january) We do not eat all local (it is pretty cold here in vermont) and we still have bananas and citrus periodically, etc... but we do the CSA's, local meat, eggs, and produce and products from the market whenever possible... my point was to blow the whole, whole food/local food = whole paycheck myth... i am happy to see others doing this as well...
happy eating...
